Volunteer Opportunities with Newcap, Inc.

Have you ever given any thought to volunteering for a non-profit organization? There are a lot of opportunitieis to do this with Newcap!

What is volunteering? It’s the practice of providing time and skills for the benefit of other people and causes, rather than financial benefit.

Newcap is a Community Action Agency, who’s mission is to move people from poverty to economic security and improve communities. As you can imagine, it take a lot of time, effort and resources to work toward achieving our mission.

You can help – by volunteering! Never been a volunteer? That’s ok! We will train you! Here are some of the volunteer opportunities at Newcap::

1. Point in Time – The Point in Time Count is done in an effort to secure an unduplicated count of people experiencing homelessness during a designated one-night period. We conduct this count twice per year (July and January). The data collected through the Point in Time process is reported in the Annual Homelessness Assessment Report (AHAR) that is provided to the U.S. Congress. Homeless information is also reported to the U.S. Department of Housing & Urban Development. In addition to including persons that are homeless and are living in emergency shelters, trainsitional housing, safe havens for the homeless, domestic violence shelters, we look for individuals and families who are unsheltered living on the streets or any other place not meant for human habitation.

2. Help for the Homeless – This is a hygiene drive that runs from February 17th through March 10th. These boxes will be filled with items like bath soap, shampoo, conditioner, tootherbrushes, toothpaste and cleaning products. After the boxes are picked up the donated items are divided among local shelters and Newcap.

3. Newcap Food Pantries – Newcap has a food pantry in Oconto, Marinette, and Crandon. We are always looking for volunteers interested in working in the pantry, assisting individuals who visit the pantry. This could include completing paperwork for the visit, restocking shelves and helping visitors to the pantry with their food choices.

4. Newcap Events – Newcap has several events throughout the year that also utilize volunteers. The Hike for Hunger is a walk that takes place in Marinette the first Saturday of May. Waterfest is an Oconto festival we participate in during the week of the 4th of July. We utilize volunteersto help us with a food booth we sponsor. And, our Auction for Action is held late fall in Green Bay. Volunteers are needed to help plan the event and the evening of the auction.

While it’s true that the more you volunteer, the more benefits you’ll experience, volunteering doesn’t have to involve a long-term commitment or take a huge amount of time out of your busy day. Giving in even simple ways can help those in need and improve your health and happiness. The most valuable assets you can bring to any volunteer effort are compassion, an open mind, a willingness to pitch in wherever needed and a positive attitude.
